Trained Dogs to Detect Liquor in Bihar

Canines underwent special training at Hyderabad based Integrated Intelligence Training Academy.

In a unique initiative of its kind, Bihar becomes the first State in India to deploy 20 specially-trained canines for detection of liquor consignments. This move comes over two years after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar first imposed an absolute prohibition in the state in April of 2016.

For this purpose, 20 canines have been stationed in each of the nine police ranges in the state of Bihar. These canines underwent basic training to enhance their liquor sniffing skills at the Hyderabad-based Integrated Intelligence Training Academy which lasted for nine months before induction. While four of the canines have been deployed in state capital Patna and Muzaffarpur each, two have been deployed in Gaya, Munger, Bhagalpur and Darbhanga each and one each in Rohtas and Purnia.

As reported by media, Additional director general of police (ADG), Crime Investigation Department (CID), Vinay Kumar has been chosen to lead these canine squads along with deputy superintendent of police (DCP) DN Mahto. Speaking to media he said that, two handlers who were with each canine during their training in Hyderabad have been appointed for each of the dogs. It has been estimated that Bihar police has spent close to Rs 1.71 lakh on each canine, including their purchase, training and induction. With the induction of this special canine squad, the total strength of Bihar police’s dog squad stands at 68.
