Elephant Herd Saved from Train Mishap

Were crossing tracks in Assam but were saved by drivers’ alacrity and hi-tech system in place.

All creatures deserve a life and for humans, it is just a small step to be kind to animals. A major train accident in Assam was averted thanks to the loco pilots JD Das and his assistant Umesh Kumar. Kamrup Express 15959 drivers managed to avert the collision near Habaipur and Lamsakhang station in Assam. On the evening of October 16, 2024, alertness and advanced technology came to the rescue of these voiceless beings. Due to the drivers’ alacrity a potential tragedy on the tracks was averted. The incident underscores the critical role of vigilance and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems in safeguarding wildlife along railway corridors.

Around 8:37 pm, Das and Kumar observed a herd of approximately 60 elephants crossing the railway tracks. Demonstrating exceptional alertness, the train crew immediately applied the emergency brakes, bringing the train to a halt.

What made this intervention even more remarkable was the role of technology. The pilots were helped by the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS), an innovative mechanism designed to detect and alert train crews about wildlife presence near tracks. The IDS, which is already operational in certain sections of the north east frontier Railway, played a pivotal role in providing timely warnings that helped the crew act decisively.

This incident highlights the growing significance of incorporating advanced technologies into railway operations, especially in regions known for their rich biodiversity. Elephant corridors, which are pathways used by these majestic animals for migration and daily movement, often intersect with railway tracks, posing a significant threat to their safety.

North east frontier Railway has been proactive in addressing this challenge. The introduction of the AI-based IDS is part of a broader initiative to minimize train-wildlife collisions. This system employs sensors and cameras to monitor elephant corridors and relay real-time alerts to train pilots, enabling them to take preventive action.

The success of the IDS in saving the lives of 60 elephants on October 16 is not an isolated incident. Since its deployment, the system has proven to be highly effective in averting accidents and ensuring the safe passage of wildlife near railway tracks.

Encouraged by these results, north east frontier Railway is now planning to expand the installation of the IDS across all elephant corridors under its jurisdiction.

The integration of technology into conservation efforts is a positive step toward coexistence between development and wildlife protection. By leveraging AI and other innovations, Indian Railways is setting a benchmark for sustainable operations while ensuring the safety of endangered species like elephants.
