Arrival of monsoon brings along the problem of ticks and skin infections, says Jotvinder Singh.
The problem of fleas and ticks in canines is aggravated when we use chemical pesticides to get rid of all those blood sucking pests which thrive in the humid climate. Now, who would want to apply the potentially harmful lotions with major side effects on tender skins, even when we try to ignore our own safety? What if your pet licks any of these poisons? Instead, why not try any of these natural flea remedies for dogs to either prevent or get rid of these pests.
We are listing a few home remedies which are relatively safe and equally effective to ward off various pests and skin ailments.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can be extremely effective in deterring pests though it may not actually kill. Rub it into your dog’s fur or put a splash into her water. If applying it topically, it’s a good idea to do so before each time your dog goes out. Method: Dilute it 50/50 with water. It does not smell after it is applied on the skin. In fact, it may even remove odors from your pet’s fur. If giving it to your pooch in water, add roughly one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to every quart of drinking water.
Brewer’s Yeast
Brewer’s yeast is another effective ingredient to ward off ticks and has shown significant results during seasonal skin ailments.
Method: To find out a safe dosage for your four-legged friend, be sure to consult your veterinarian.
Lavender
Dogs do benefit from topical application of lavender oil in several ways. Lavender essential oil when diluted with a neutral natural oil such as almond or coconut oil can be soothing.
Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits are known for their flea repelling properties. What’s more, they’re completely harmless to your dog and can be found in any grocery store or perhaps even your garden, if you live in a warm climate. Squeeze the juice from an orange or lemon and rub it into your dog’s fur. Not only will it protect against fleas, it will make your pup’s coat smell heavenly!
Water
Last but not the least, general overall hygiene with normal bathing can actually repel fleas. This is because fleas can’t grasp to the shafts of hair, the way human lice do, so if you give your dog a good bath – just with water, or with a doggy shampoo.
