Bengaluru dog owners will now have to pay a fine of Rs 1000 if they don’t comply by the new provisions under which one can own a dog.

The move came as per a new rule established by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The Urban Development Department (UDD) gave its approval to BBMP’s new law under which dog owners will have to get a dog license and a collar with an embedded GPS chip.

What the rule is all about

  • Dog owners will have to get a dog license and they have to get it renewed annually
  • All dog collars need to be fitted with a microchip with an embedded GPS in it
  • People living in an apartment building are permitted to house only one dog while independent house owners can house three dogs
  • All pet owners are required to scoop their dog’s poop if they defecate in a public place. If the owners don’t comply, they have to pay a fine of Rs 100
  • If dogs which are not licensed show signs of rabies, they can be treated as stray dogs and will be euthanized by the health officers and veterinarians
  • Anyone who violates these laws will have to pay a fine of Rs 1000 and a fine of Rs 300 per day if they still refuse to abide by the rules
  • BBMP has released a list of 64 dog breeds and people can only house dogs belonging to these breeds
