Now Facial Recognition Software For Dogs

Every dog has a unique nose.

Beijing, July 16, 2019: An AI-startup that is backed by Alibaba which supplies artificial intelligence software to Chinese government has come up with  software that can identify dogs by their noses. The facial recognition software developed by Megvii really can identify one dog from another by using nasal Biometrics.

As per media reports the company has developed the software on the basis that dogs have unique nose prints. Dr. David Dorman, a professor of toxicology, said to media that “like human fingerprints, each dog has a unique nose print. Some kennel clubs have used dog nose prints for identification.”

As technology moves on, so the need to cover the nose of your dog with ink and taking a print like something out of a surreal pet detective dream has also. According to news report , the new Megvii software just requires a smartphone camera to take a series of images of the nose from different angles that are then analyzed by the software to determine the critical identification markers.

This method currently allows for 95% accuracy in identifying dogs that have had their nose-prints previously recorded. Megvii also says that checking records against a “larger database” will produce a “high precision” in identifying individual dogs, although the report stated the company hadn’t provided further information about this broader surveillance scenario.

However, this being China, the nasal recognition technology can also be used to monitor dog behavior. Chinese cities, home to some 91 million pet cats and dogs, have been reported as cracking down on what is referred to as uncivilized dog keeping. Walking your dog off the leash in public areas or not clearing up the poop it leaves behind understandably attract a fine. Now it could be easier for owners of these unrestrained and unsupervised dogs to be traced using the dog facial recognition software alongside existing data.
