Nutraceutical supplements have gained popularity in recent years as a way to promote overall health and well-being for both humans and animals. These supplements are rich in vitamins, minerals, and various bioactive compounds that may be lacking in a typical pet’s diet. In the context of joint health for pets, it’s important to first understand how joints function in animal bodies.

Understanding Joints function

Joints serve as the connections between bones, acting as cushions that allow the body to move smoothly and comfortably. While some joints are highly mobile and others are fixed, all contribute to structural support and movement.

The ends of the bones around each joint are covered by cartilage, the major connective tissue that acts as the primary shock absorber between bones, reducing friction and wear during movement.

To maintain healthy joint cartilage, a consistent supply of essential nutrients is required. Key compounds like glucosamine, chondroitin sulphates, methylsulphonylmethane (MSM), collagen supplement etc., support cartilage integrity and repair. These nutrients are transported to the joint via synovial fluid, a viscous liquid that surrounds the joint and is responsible for joint flexibility and resilience.

Signs of Joint Issues in Pets

It’s essential to be aware of any potential signs of joint issues in pets, as they may not always show obvious signs of discomfort. Here are a few signs to look out for:

Nutraceutical supplements to promote joint health in pets

Nutraceuticals are kind of food and food supplement with health and medicinal benefits. Nutraceuticals are often presented as compounds that can protect against chronic disease and may contain isolated nutrients, dietary supplements, or herbal products as below.

Table: 1 Types of various nutraceuticals and its functions in Joint health-

Glucosamine – A natural polymer that connects bones and joints to provide cushioning during movement. It is one of the critical building blocks of joint cartilage.

Chondroitin– It is an important structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression.

MSM (Methylsulphonylmethane)– An organo-sulphur compound. Sulphur is an important building block for healthy bones and joints and is useful for the support of a healthy immune system.

Hyaluronic Acid– It is the major component of synovial fluid and helps to lubricate joint structure.

L- Glutamic Acid– An important metabolite for the cells lining the gut; helps promote glutamine generation, supporting absorptive function and structural integrity.

Curcumin/Piperine– Curcumin is the active isolate of turmeric and supports the dog’s natural anti-inflammatory response. Piperine is an alkaloid found in Black and Long pepper and helps to support the bioavailability of Curcumin.

Collagen Matrix– Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is a major constituent of bone, cartilage, tendon, and other connective tissue. It helps connective tissue to be strong and provides cushioning for various parts of the body.

Rosehip– Help reduce inflammation around painful joints affected by osteoarthritis. By reducing joint inflammation, pain may also be reduced, helping petto regain mobility and comfort.

Salmon Oil– Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and phospholipids. Salmon oil complements both krill and Green Lipped Mussel oil to provide highly bioavailable sources of EPA & DHA.

Vitamin E– Vitamin E compounds – including tocopherols are antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals. Vitamin E compounds are incorporated into the cell membrane and help maintain their integrity throughout the body.

Micronized Beet Pulp– A good source of dietary fibre and provides prebiotic support for a healthy digestive system.

Oatmeal / Black Oat– Provides vital beta-glucans which support a healthy digestive system and immune response.

Sunflower Oil– The omega 6 fatty acids in sunflower oil help to reduce inflammation, which is a key factor in joint pain.
