Canine Chiseler: Therapy Dog Was the Thief Stealing From a Toy Donation Bin

Detectives quickly got to the bottom of it and caught the thief in the act: it was Ben Franklin, the police department’s therapy dog.

Massachusetts, December 21, 2019: It wasn’t the Grinch after all! The police department in Franklin, Mass., had been collecting toys during this year’s holiday season to send to the non-profit Santa Foundation, but noticed some kept going missing. Detectives quickly got to the bottom of it and caught the thief in the act: it was Ben Franklin, the police department’s therapy dog.

“We learned an extremely valuable lesson today,” the Franklin Police Department wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. “When you have a classroom full of toys ready to be shipped off to the Santa Foundation, you should… 1. Close the door to the classroom Or 2. Keep the toys elevated[.] If not, a golden retriever will slowly hoard them throughout the day and bring them back to his lair. Thanks to Officer Cusson for capturing this larceny on camera.”

According to time.com, in a video that’s now been viewed over 300,000 times, an officer can be heard asking Ben “where are you going?” as the dog prances through the police station with a toy baby basket in his mouth. The video ends with Ben taking the baby underneath a desk, where it looks like he might have been hoarding the toys.

“When they saw him walking out of the classroom, they were like: ‘What is he doing?’” Franklin Police Deputy Chief James Mill told Boston 25 News. “The facility is locked down so we knew it was pretty simple to figure out it was Ben… When Ben saw the toys, he thought they all belonged to him.”

But Ben got off with a warning this time. “It was an easy solution. Ben here is now banned from this room. I mean, he’s gotten his slobber all over them at this point so the police department has replaced them,” Mill told Boston 25 News.

Heartbroken Man Writes Teary Note to Thief to Return the Photographs of His Deceased Dog

Saoirse Morgan shared a picture of a note pasted pleading thief to return a memory card containing pictures of the unknown person’s dog’s last day alive.

Toronto, June 14, 2019: Man-dog companionship and unconditional love can go beyond the cycle of life and death. At least a recent case proves this fact. It has been a difficult weekend for an Ontario resident as he lost the only memories of his pet dog in the form of photographs after a robbery at his residence. He has just one request for the thief – that he returns the memory card from the loot and nothing else, because it contains pictures of his dead dog.

His note to the thief has gone viral on social media after it was shared on Facebook by Saoirse Morgan, who found the photo of it posted at Bloor and Lansdowne in Ontario. “This is simply heartbreaking. I hope this person does the right thing,” reads his caption of the post for the note.

In his note, the resident pleaded with the thief to return the memory card as it “has photos of my dog’s last day alive on it.” His other belongings weren’t a matter of concern but his dog’s last memories certainly are.

“To the man who was in my house and robbed me. Keep the cash, and my DSLR, and whatever else you took. But if you have the memory card from the camera, please, it has photos of my dog’s last day alive on it. I cannot replace those photos,” his note read.

Also, he isn’t interested in meeting or punishing the burglar as he added in his note along with his residential address, “Please throw it (memory card) onto the porch or put it in the mail slot. Or mail it.”

His note concluded with a heartbreaking appeal: “Please. She died a few days ago. I cannot lose those photos as well.”
